My discipline philosophy...
I believe that discipline is fundamentally vital to the successful academic development and social well-being of students. I strive to implement consistent and fair discipline procedures that will best serve the needs of my students. I commit to getting to know my students, learning their home life and what influences them, both positively and negatively. I believe that understanding my student leads to a more trusting relationship and in turn, a positive classroom atmosphere. Building self esteem through positive reinforcement strategies provide an avenue for student success.
Positive reinforcement strategies are a key component of my discipline philosophy. It is more effective to reinforce good behaviors through free and frequent rewards such as praise, stickers, drawings for prizes, and positive notes home. Also, it is essential to continue reinforced positive behaviors by giving intermittent rewards less often to provide the students will a goal to work towards. Some examples of these rewards include homework passes, computer time, and bonus points. Each of these strategies leads to more long term positive reinforcers of good behavior such as student of the month/year, field trips, and class celebrations.
One of my major goals is instilling self-regulatory behaviors in my students. It is extremely important that students are able to recognize their own problem behaviors and correct them. This is the reason reinforcement strategies are so important. We begin using frequent reinforcers and gradually, we cut back on the reinforcers as the student is able to self regulate their behaviors. Self regulation is a key life skill that will benefit my students in the future.
No student in my classroom will ever be mistreated verbally or physically. The key to positive classroom management is an understanding of each student, recognizing what they have been through and what drives them. As teachers, we use that information in a positive way to encourage the future success of our students.
